EXPLORING SEXUAL ADDICTION: CERTIFIED SEX ADDICTION THERAPY EXPLAINED

In our last blog post, we delved into what sex addiction is, some common signs of sex addiction, and discussed the additional training a certified sex addiction therapist must obtain. Dr. Lara Dye is a CSAT in Austin who offers sex addiction therapy. Contact her today! In this blog post, we’ll go more in depth about how a CSAT can benefit you.

THE ADDED BENEFITS OF A CSAT

  • Better diagnosis. Other therapists who have not received the additional therapy through IITAP (International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals) might miss the signs of a sex addiction with patients, especially if that person is in denial or doesn’t complain about it. Addictions continue in part because many people are in denial that they have a problem in the first place. Hence, the patient could think it’s something else causing their problems. With regards specifically to sex addiction, erectile dysfunction could be the problem the person seeks treatment for instead of the addiction itself.
  • Better treatment. CSAT training involves a specific task-approach treatment plan that other therapists do not necessarily know or use. With CSAT training, the ability to break through the denial and deception phase is specifically addressed with additional tools to use. Furthermore, the CSAT will know when the client is ready for group therapy and when is the appropriate time in treatment to make full disclosure to partners and loved ones. Commonly, there is more than one addiction when sex addiction is present, and CSATs are well-versed in how to address all of these specifics as well.
  • Right treatment first. Many non CSAT therapists will see the problem as a relationship problem and focus in on couples therapy instead. Sex addiction is not a relationship problem and must be addressed and solved first before relationship problems can be addressed. When a spouse or partner is involved, the situation must be managed appropriately in order to not implicate the spouse in any way and only exacerbate the situation and the relationship more.
  • All-inclusive. CSATs are still therapists, trained in all areas of clinical psychology. They will perform an overall clinical assessment of the patient and do any other due diligence such as other testing or information-gathering in the treatment process. In the cases with other partners or spouses, CSATs treat the other partner as well as the sex addict. This is usually separate and then combined sessions. Dr. Lara Dye has recently embraced telehealth services, which is therapy online. This allows her to treat patients in the comfort of their own home, making the reluctant spouse more likely to participate.
  • Still a sex addiction counselor. CSATs are specialists much like orthopedic surgeons, neurological veterinarians, and paleontologists. However, all are trained in the overarching branches of their discipline, therapists, doctors, veterinarians, and archaeologists respectively. CSATs are wonderful therapists who want to deepen their knowledge in order to better serve people as well as use their individual talents to further this desire.

Certified Sex Addiction Therapists specialize in sex addiction, a process addiction. They are passionate about helping sex addicts realize they have a problem, accept this fact, and move to modify their behaviors. Trained to recognize the signs, CSATs can help your loved one move forward with healthy relationships.
